Social Work Activities
New Alpha Delta Mu MembersNew Alpha Delta Mu members were inducted on April, 10, 2008 by Dr. Mark Lynch. Dr. Teelyn Mauney, Dr. James Logue and Ms. Sue Black made speeches and congratulated the honorees.
There were six students inducted this year, Jenna Brian, Maureen Rogers, Samantha Gibson, Pam Kosh, Kanisha Garrett, and Jennifer Marasco were excepted as members at the annual banquet.
CSWE Event Presentation
Dr. Mark Lynch, Ms. Sue Black and Dr. Lening Zhang presented at the Council on Social Work Education Annual Conference in San Francisco in October of 2007. The Presentation entitled “Using computer and internet resources to do a needs assessment and mock grant proposal” was attended by over 45 participants and was widely acknowledged as an outstanding presentation by social work educators in attendance. There has been a request by some participants to make the session a half day educational experience. This will be explored!
Christmas Wrapping Event
Once again, the Social Work Club raised money to support the Dorothy Day Center with the Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program and the Angel Tree. The program and club provided gifts for a family of seven.
FSMA Golf Outing
The Social Work Club and Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy held the 5th Annual Lilian Kennedy memorial Tournament featuring Golf at the Iron Masters Country Club in Roaring Springs, PA. The event featured a best ball tournament, a dinner, prizes for the golfers and other activities. The event raised over $2300 for the FSMA.
Social Work Club Organization of the Year at Saint Francis University
For the 3rd time in eight years, the Social Work Club has been awarded the prestigious Organization of the Year award at the President’s Award Night. The club did a number of activities this year and was well deserving of the award. We are pleased that the Student Government Association considered us worthy of this award and thank them.
Students of the Year Named
The senior students of the year are Jennifer Lynch and Victoria Greenough. Jennifer will be working at Catholic Charities as a social worker. Victoria still working on plans, and hopes to find a job soon. Both plan to attend graduate school in the near future.
Alpha Delta Mu 2007
Alpha Delta Mu, the honorary social work society at SFU, inducted 5 new members in April at the annual Alpha Delta Mu Banquet. The new members are seniors Michala Seidel, Patti Miller and Victoria Greenough and juniors Karen O’Keefe and Stephanie Dostal. The speakers were Dr. Lening Zhang, Co-odinator of the Sociology, Dr. Teelyn Mauny, Assistant Professor of Sociology and our own Ms. Sue Black, Instructor, Social Work.
Take Back the Night 2007
The Take Back the Night event was a wonderful success this semester! There were 9 events during the week, featuring speakers from agencies throughout the area, speaking about such topics as domestic violence and empowerment, men helping men programs, rape prevention, elder abuse, children abuse and neglect mandated reporting and of course a self-defense program. The self-defense program featured Doug Hoover for the second straight year and the students learned and enjoyed workable ways to protect themselves. Mr. Hoover has indicated that he and members of his dojo would be happy to return again.
This year, once again, 6 tee-shirts were made to add to the Clothesline Project, over 200 people signed the “these hands won’t hurt” petition and banner and the sidewalk statistics were placed all over campus. The library graciously allowed us to display part of our Clothesline Project, for which we are very appreciative.
The capstone event featured the Cambria County Coroner, readings by TBTN students and social work club members, and a Candlelight Vigil, lead by Brother Gabe. It was a great experience! 47 students did there senior capstone through the program and over 350 individuals attended during the week of events!
Family Christmas Program
The Social Work Club was involved, once again, with the Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program and the Angel Tree, sponsored by the Dorothy Day. Jennifer Lynch, a social work major, spearheaded the event which provided gifts for the most recipients ever! The Social Work Club raised over $300 wrapping presents for faculty, staff and students. The money was used to help a family of 4 through the AFC program and we were also able to buy gifts for several angel tree participant. Additionally, Social Work Club members and Dr. Lynch helped the Dorothy Days Center staff and volunteers wrap presents for the over 400 recipients.
