This interdisciplinary major helps students acquire analytical skills and the ability to speak and write clearly. Training is provided in problem solving, statistics, library research, mathematics, logic, writing, and public speaking. Coursework on public policy, governmental operations, history, and other relevant subjects is provided. An internship providing and experiential blend of theory and practice is also part of this program.
Students also select one Interdisciplinary Field of Concentration from Management, the Social Sciences, or the Liberal Arts.
Such a diverse background provides useful preparation for graduate education, and/or for careers in government service (at the federal, state, or local level), nonprofit organizations, private sector management, and other fields.
BACHELOR OF ARTS OR SCIENCE IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION/GOVERNMENT SERVICE MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
Political Science 102, 103, 314, 398/399 (six credits), 499 and nine credits from 302, 303, 304, or 312; Statistics 101; six additional credits from Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics
Interdisciplinary Concentrations: Fifteen credits can be taken in any one of the three interdisciplinary options listed below. Students with specific goals may substitue courses from other options areas, but only with the written and field consent of the department chair.
1. Liberal Arts concentration: Biology 103, 203; History 340, 350, 375, 385, 400.1, 440; Communications 101, 201; Philosophy 311; Psychology 204; Foreign Languages 201 or above.
2. Social Science Concentration: At least one course in each of the four disciplines: Economics 102, 203, 303; History 340, 350, 375, 385, 400.1, 440; Psychology 204, 304, 322, 323; Sociology 303.
3. Management Concentration: Accounting 101, 102, 405; Business Law 301; Economics 303; Management 101, 201, 302, 326.
MINOR REQUIREMENTS
Sixteen to eighteen credits, including Political Science 102, 304 or 313, 314, 398/399 (three credits), 202 (1 credit) or 499, and Statistics 101.
