Mission/Philosophy

 

Mission of the Department of Physical Therapy

Saint Francis University Department of Physical Therapy will prepare students to enter professional practice as competent, ethical, caring doctors of physical therapy. The graduates will be prepared to practice in a complex healthcare environment, demonstrate critical thinking, embrace lifelong learning, and use an evidence-based approach to support decisions and serve the needs of consumers and society.

Philosophy of the Department of Physical Therapy

The educational approach at Saint Francis University reflects the philosophy that a solid yet diverse academic base, critical thinking skills, a strong moral foundation and a love for lifelong learning are essential tools for success in the world. The philosophies of the University and the Department are complementary. The philosophy of the Department, which will lead to the successful realization of its mission, can be described in five main statements.

1. The Department operates as part of the university organizational structure and functions with the belief that physical therapist professional education at the post-baccalaureate degree level is compatible with the environment of a coeducational liberal arts university.

2. Physical therapists are professionals who possess specific knowledge and skills, and who specialize in the analysis and treatment of movement dysfunction.

3. “Learning can be thought of as a process by which behavior changes as a result of experiences” (Maples and Webster, 1980).

4. Theories of learning in adulthood are useful guides for physical therapist professional education, curriculum development, faculty evaluation and development, and related Departmental academic and administrative services.

5. People are unique and diverse both in clinical and educational settings, and the activities conducted in each.
