Saint Francis University’s Reading Clinic Receives Grant
Saint Francis University’s Reading Clinic recently received a generous $1300 grant from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, an organization that supports a wide variety of community projects. Mr. Hugh Hudnall of Mainline National Bank, on behalf of the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, visited the campus at Saint Francis to present the check to Dr. Frances Boyd, associate professor of education. Dr. Boyd founded the University Reading Clinic (URC) and serves as director. The Saint Francis Reading Clinic operates on the Loretto campus and in Nicktown as a satellite site. Clinic operations are funded solely by donations. The grant will help provide books, awards, and prizes to reading clinic participants and will also help fund the clinic during the summer months when group and individual programs are offered.
The goals of the University Reading Clinic are to provide support to children who may need help with reading skills, to build reading skills, and to develop a passion for reading.
Undergraduate and graduate students from Saint Francis University serve as volunteer tutors at both sites. The Loretto site meets on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in Schwab Hall on the University campus. The Nicktown site meets at Northern Cambria Catholic School on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 p.m. -5 p.m. Both sites currently have openings for new participants for this free support service. Interested parents may contact the education department at Saint Francis University for further information and enrollment at 814-472-3147.
