Saint Francis Opens Season With Sweep of Nazareth
LORETTO, Pa. – Juniors Jordan Varee (Conneautville, Pa. / Conneaut Valley) and Peter Freyer (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) had 15 and 11 kills, respectively, to help lead the Saint Francis men’s volleyball team to a 3-0 season-opening sweep over Nazareth College on Saturday night at DeGol Arena.
The Red Flash won their third season-opener in as many years by scores of 30-20, 30-28, 30-27. The match marked the first of nine at DeGol Arena to open the season. Saint Francis will be back in action 7 p.m. Friday versus New York University, at DeGol Arena.
Freyer hit .562 for the match with 11 kills and just two errors on 16 swings, and also contributed four blocks and two digs. Varee had 15 kills, three blocks and an ace, senior Shane Conley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) dished out 38 assists and had three blocks, and junior Nick Rivett (Conneautville, Pa. / Conneaut Valley) added seven kills, seven digs and a block.
Billy Gimello had a team-high nine kills for Nazareth.
SFU hit .244 for the match, and held Nazareth to an .021 hitting percentage. The Red Flash also outblocked their opponent 9.0 to 6.0.
